Elderberry is a wonderful, widely known medicinal plant. It grows throughout the world and is known for it's antiviral properties, more specifically, treating the influenza virus. Although Elderberry has some other wonderful properties, medicinal and spiritual. Medicinal wise it is antiviral, antioxidant, antirheumatic, immunostimulant, anti-inflammatory, diaphoretic, nervine, etc. Elderberry syrup is often seen in health stores! This plant is a wonderful addition to a daily routine, as well as in the incident of a cold. Elderberry does have a constituent in it, called cyanogenic glycosides, that may induce vomiting and diarrhea if used too much at once.
Spirits of all kinds live all throughout nature. This is why we are so gracious when harvesting from the earth. In many cultures it is said that the spirit of Eldemore lives in the Elderberry bushes. When harvesting from these plants one is to take extra care to ask and say thank you, as well as leave something in return. Another story told about elderberry, is if on the night of the summer solstice one sleeps under the elderberry bush, you will be taken to the realm of fairies..to return, or not to return.....
Nature is amazing and all around us we have food and medicine, growing right at our feet! As spirits are within us, spirits pervade all living things, including plants. It is respectful to give thanks to the earth often, especially when we take from her. If you are to ever spot an elderberry tree, offer your love to Eldemore. Maybe you will see some fae!
Much love to all, blessed be!
